Surprisingly, many world-class athletes who are at the top of their game don’t seem to be having trouble with getting enough protein from their vegan meals. In fact, a lot of them have continued to thrive and maintain peak levels of performance after transitioning to a plant-based diet.

Venus Williams, the second highest-earning female tennis player of all time, has won seven Grand Slam singles titles and 14 Grand Slam Women’s doubles titles. She is also a 5-time winner of the prestigious Wimbledon women’s singles title and has four Olympic gold medals under her belt.
The tennis star began her vegan way of eating after being diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome in 2011. Going vegan has reportedly helped her relieve some of her symptoms such as joint pain and extreme fatigue.
While ultra-marathon running normally starts at distances beyond the standard marathon of 26.2 miles (42km), Scott Jurek has successfully reached up to 246km. With a personal record of 165.7 miles ran over a 24 hour period and 16 prestigious ultra-marathon titles to boast, Scott has been dubbed as “the top ultra runner in the country, maybe in the world, arguably of all time,” as written in Chris McDougall’s book ‘Born to Run.’
This 3-time Ultra-running Magazine “Ultra-Runner of the Year” transitioned from meat to potatoes and into a fully vegan diet during college, when he witnessed certain health defects and illnesses at physical therapy school. Jurek’s mother also has multiple sclerosis, and the ultra runner made a long-term decision to turn vegan in order to steer clear of his family’s history of chronic disease.
A true advocate of veganism, professional skier Heather Mills was among the first to pioneer the availability of vegan food in New York by donating $1 million worth of plant-based foods to Hunts Point Alliance for Children, a non-profit organization that assists in the provision of food in the Bronx.
Heather suffered a severe leg injury in 1993 and was given a raw vegan diet by a Florida Health Institute to speed up the healing of her wound. She continues to follow a strict vegan diet and is outspoken about the animal cruelty aspect of veganism. Heather remains as one of the leading athletes globally in her sport of downhill skiing.
Two-time world champion and Olympic medalist pair skater Meagan Duhamel turned vegan overnight and has never looked back. This seven-time Canadian national champion adopted a vegan diet in 2018 after reading the book ‘Skinny Bitch’ which covers the health benefits of a plant-based diet as well as the animal rights aspect of veganism.
She continues to skate with her skate partner Eric Radford and also trains trains with vegan retired ice hockey star Georges Laraque for long distance runs.
